Becoming a better engineer

I joined GoJek as a product engineer 5 weeks before. As a product engineer, its our job to take care of product end to end!

In our professional lives, we are given the project by our lead. We note the requirements carefully and start with the product. We often tend to not see the overall picture of what will happen with the product. Who will use it? Why they will use it? We get so overwhelmed to start with the code and debate on the frameworks to use that we don’t see the overall picture most of the times. This results is writing the code but not going into production or going into the production and very few people using it! We create a bias in our mind for the person giving us the job to create it and start it without questioning if we actually require it or can we make a better version of the same.

A paradigm to be followed before doing anything —

Before-After: We see a lot of before after ads for slimming, hair treatments, etc. So before picking up a task always make a clear view of the scenario before and after it. If before-after images are same — nobody buys it!

I am part of the business which aims to become sustainably profitable. And its my duty to not produce dump code which no one uses. Same thing goes for anyone in any work industry.

The worst thing we as engineers can do is to not give a shit about how many people use our product! Our job is to not just write the code but also to make people use our product. I often make products and don’t market them which results in not making other people use it. I am planning to write a blog on few of my projects and also to popularize it. Some of my projects are:

  1. Fake Mean Data Generator
  2. Webhook url generator which displays the data as message on your facebook.
